1. VS Controller

  • The method of using VS controllers is a method that has been adopted for a long time. VS motor (VS motor) is a motor with magnetic coupling. The machine speed can be adjusted. A magnetic coupling is essentially a clutch where the “cup” and “case” operation is performed by the DC magnetic field of the electromagnet. Depending on whether this magnetic field is strong or weak, the magnetic force is linked between the motor shaft. And the machine shaft structure is strong or weak and finally the speed on the shaft end of the machine is fast or slow. We can smoothly adjust the output speed of the machine shaft by a DC voltage controller connected to the coil of the magnetic coupling.

Should VS controller be replaced with inverter?.

1.1. Disadvantages of VS . Controller

  • During operation, the asynchronous motor always rotates at rated speed. Although the speed of the mechanical machine changes this results in a large amount of power wasted.
  • The adjustable speed range of the VS motor is only from 0Hz to the mains frequency. The VS motor controller does not have the ability to compensate for starting torque, and does not start the motor smoothly.
  • No motor protection functions, phase loss protection. Does not improve the power factor of the motor. Not integrating advanced functions, the ability to communicate with PLC, HMI is limited…
Performance is lost because of the transmission through an additional magnetic clutch transmission.

2. Advantages of the inverter

Should VS controller be replaced with inverter?.

  • Today, with the development of semiconductor technology. Inverter is the #1 choice for speed control of 3-phase asynchronous motors.
  • The working speed of the mechanism machine will be adjusted steplessly by stepless adjustment. The rotation speed of the motor is not synchronous, so a large amount of power is saved. Improve the power factor of the motor.
  • The speed regulation range of the inverter is from 0~400Hz. Therefore, it is possible to speed up the motor very high (8 times compared to the grid).
  • Control mode V/F, SVC, VC, Torque.
  • Large starting torque, torque compensation up to 10%, smooth motor start.
  • Dynamic braking and DC braking function.
  • Motor protection function with fault detection such as overvoltage, undervoltage, input phase loss, output phase loss, motor overload, overcurrent, ground fault, etc.
  • The inverter also integrates many other useful functions such as: multi-speed running, clicking, simple PLC, free stop, speed catch…
  • The ability to connect computers, PLCs, HMIs through communication ports, the ability to connect 2 display screens in parallel to hundreds of meters.
